Sequoia Grove Winery: A Culinary Escape Beneath the Redwoods

Sequoia Gove Summer 2025 food and wine tasting

Right in the heart of Napa Valley’s Rutherford AVA, along Highway 29, sits the Sequoia Grove Winery. Founded in 1979, the name comes, quite obviously, when you’re standing there under giant sequoia trees that have grown hundreds of feet over the estate, a unique and rare sight in Napa wine country. The winery feels both grand and grounded, making for a perfect first impression for a winery dedicated to crafting balanced, age-worthy Cabernet Sauvignon.

I drove up to the property, immediately charmed by the original winery building, a beautifully renovated 19th-century barn. It stood as a humble reminder of their “roots”, despite the modern, inviting feel of the rest of the estate.

The Rutherford AVA is renowned for its distinctive earthiness, often called “Rutherford Dust.” This unique characteristic results from the region's gravelly, loamy soil and warm, sunny climate, which together impart a rich, dusty quality to the Napa Valley wines. Sequoia Grove is planted in this unique terroir, sourcing fruit that results in powerful yet elegant wines.

What truly elevated my visit from a tasting to an immersive experience was the people. I was fortunate enough to spend time with Sequoia Grove winemaker Jesse Fox. I was able to talk with Jesse, learn his passion and drive behind the wines, and even taste wine from the barrel with him. He walked me through the winery's commitment to sustainability and approach in the cellar, demonstrating that wine is all about showcasing the land’s true potential.

My host, Luis Toscana, was an absolute delight, welcoming, down-to-earth, and the kind of host who immediately makes you feel at ease. The tasting, which felt perfectly intimate, highlighted their focus on single-vineyard expressions and flagship blends. I was seated with my group at a table under the majestic sequoia trees, feeling completely immersed in nature and the relaxing environment. The tranquil surroundings and Luis's warm hospitality made me feel completely at ease, enhancing my overall experience.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to experience the Sequoia Food and Wine Pairing, created by Chef Bryce Palmer, which featured one of the most unique and fantastic food-and-Cabernet Sauvignon experiences I’ve ever had. This elevated experience makes it one of the most memorable stops on any Napa Wine Tour.

For the “A Taste for Cabernet” food and wine pairings, I had:

  • Grilled Spanish octopus atop crispy potatoes, with harissa aioli paired with the 2023 Haire Vineyard Chardonnay

  • Next, the “Education Plate” consisting of Lemon, French grey salt, Italian plum, and Beemster Gouda, was paired with the 2017 Rutherford Bench Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Third, Kombu marinated ahi tuna with avocado mousse, served with serpent cucumbers, grilled Italian plums, heirloom tomatoes, and sourdough croutons, and drizzled with a fermented tomato vinaigrette, paired with the 2015 Tonella Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • Fourth, Miso-marinated local sea bass with lobster mushrooms, purple daikon, fava beans, and sweet corn pudding, paired with 2019 Christian Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon.

  • And to finish, Flannery beef ribeye with Italian butter beans, summer harvest caponata, Genovese basil, and drizzled in cold-pressed Puglia olive oil paired with 2017 Cambium Proprietary red blend.

My favorite pairing of the experience was the miso-marinated sea bass with the 2019 Christian Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. I thought this pairing brought out the best of both the dish and the wine. Given that sea bass is a white fish, I was pleasantly surprised that Chef Bryce was able to pair it so well with the Cabernet Sauvignon.

I was most surprised and delighted by this experience, particularly by how two different fish were paired with a heavy Cabernet Sauvignon. Sequoia Grove Winery and Chef Bryce are truly breaking the mold and redefining unconventional pairings with their experience.

My visit to Sequoia Grove was a beautiful blend of history and hospitality. The majestic trees, the friendly faces of Jesse and Luis, and the quality of the wine created an unforgettable experience. If you’re looking for a classic Napa Valley wine tasting that curates excellent, unique food and wine pairings, then you must visit Sequoia Grove Winery!
